MU

SELL
September 18, 2026Horizon stated in the case: 5 trading days

Published once at least 12 trading days had closed after this run.

Summary

Sell MU into strength around current levels, fading pushes toward overhead supply. Trim longs and do not chase MU; keep any residual long hedged with defined risk puts or collars, not naked short dated calls into 70.6% IV. Size for elevated volatility and allow wide intraday swings. Support sits below current levels then at the medium term average area; resistance sits at the recent high then heavier supply above. Invalidation is a settled close above resistance with momentum turning positive or above upper supply on volume. Horizon is 5 trading days into the earnings and Fed binary.

The case

Bearish in the near term on MU despite an intact long term uptrend. Our analysis sees MU holding above the long term average and having reclaimed the medium term average after several closes pinned on it, now above the short term average and middle band. But momentum is rebuilding not confirmed with RSI higher with room but without thrust and MACD still below signal with a negative histogram. Overhead is immediate with the recent intraday high then heavy supply aligning with prior closes. Risk reward is unfavorable with limited upside to resistance versus larger downside to the medium term average and lower band amid elevated volatility and high beta fragility, and MU lagged peers SanDisk +6% and WDC +3% (+1.1% vs SanDisk +1.6% premarket).

Fundamentals are peak cycle with real strength on revenue growth on flat costs, operating income versus net with no one time gain, cash roughly doubled, debt cut, operating cash flow covering capex multiple times and plant build. But the depressed forward multiple versus trailing is a classic peak multiple trap requiring holding the +140% DRAM / +130% NAND run that company filings warn can swing sharply in both directions and fall below cost. An 80.37% operating margin, 55.9% net, ROE 66.6% and elevated book multiple scream peak and will deleverage fast with tax already incurred. Receivables up 79% quarter over quarter with cash drag on the quarter over quarter revenue jump with inventory flat is late cycle until collection proves otherwise. Strategic agreements and floor pricing are unquantified and challenged by a competitor with about 10% DRAM share prepping a new NAND line; tightness commentary confirms tightness but not duration.

Crowded positioning into the binary favors fading strength. Our analysis sees confidence heavily bullish versus bearish, call activity outweighing put activity, elevated implied volatility with balanced open interest offering no cushion, and a market fear gauge showing fear with 5% yields.

Past lessons support fading resistance not chasing. Fading an unfinished bounce into upper supply avoided negative alpha, with a prior Sell capturing -5.3% and -4.8% moves, while buying a 250% year to date extension about 1% under the upper band cost -4.3% alpha. Pressing breakdown below support as momentum stabilized into the Fed binary left +0.8% to +4.4% foregone, with related Underweight and Sell episodes leaving +5.5% and +4.4% on the table. The current trade is the successful approach of fading into overhead supply with unconfirmed momentum, not pressing support. Require a settled close below support and especially the medium term average to confirm, or above resistance with positive momentum plus quantified floors, collection without inventory build, and firm contracts to reconsider. Market and fundamental reference levels differ by only 0.04%, well under the 2% threshold, so our analysis uses the most current reference for entry and exit.

What would weaken it

  • Breakout settles above overhead supply with momentum confirming higher
  • Cycle extends on firm floor pricing and receivables collection
  • Volatility squeeze on earnings/Fed binary forces sharp reversal
