COST

SELL
September 18, 2026Horizon stated in the case: 5-trading-day horizon

Published once at least 12 trading days had closed after this run.

Summary

Sell COST into strength ahead of Sept 24 fiscal Q4. Our analysis sees shares holding below a full stack of short term and long term moving averages in an orderly drift with room below and no capitulation bottom. Fade intraday pushes toward overhead resistance and do not chase dips. Use only a light starter trim of trading longs and put spreads, with no naked long premium at 38% IV, over a short horizon through earnings. Invalidation is a settled daily close above resistance with expanding range and a momentum turn; downside references sit at the lower Bollinger band then the prior low, using about one average true range for stops and sizing.

The case

1. Technicals remain in a downtrend. Our analysis sees COST holding below its full stack of short term, volume weighted and long term averages after a failed poke above the short term average, with closes below the volume weighted average, negative momentum with a negative histogram, weak but not oversold momentum, and contracting volatility with room to the lower Bollinger band in an orderly drift with no capitulation bottom.

2. Positioning and sentiment are defensive into the event. Confidence is neutral, social sentiment is split on valuation skepticism, option flows show defensive put call skew, implied volatility sits at 38%, and a market fear gauge shows fear, so investors are paying for protection into a high multiple print.

3. Catalyst timing and valuation work against chasing. Delivery expansion that broadens reach and helps site scarcity is real but is a next quarter story, too late for the Sept 24 fiscal Q4 consensus and potentially margin dilutive, which is why a sell side firm kept a Buy but cut its target. The stock is down -10.2% in 6m vs S&P up 12.9%, while fundamentals are strong with revenue up 11.59%, operating profit up 11.26%, net up 15.19%, equity up 23.5% and 29% ROE with solid cash, flat debt and inventory discipline, but the multiple prices perfection for 3% net margins and 0.66% yield with soft cash conversion on capex, requiring flawless ex gas and currency comps, renewal and Executive penetration, and margin dollars versus costs.

4. Our recent history supports fading pops. Three entries show a 100% hit rate averaging -1.23% alpha over five days, with recent Sell and Underweight positions producing -1.1% to -1.5% alpha by holding below the moving average ladder at stretched multiples. The recurring failure is pressing deep downside targets too early as price holds flat and coiled above support, so our analysis requires an expanding volume breakdown before pressing. Hence Sell as a trim and fade of rallies to resistance, keep light into the print, and require a moving average reclaim with a momentum turn plus clean traffic, renewal quality and margin dollars to flip bullish post print.

What would weaken it

  • Daily close above resistance with expanding range flips trend
  • Needs flawless comps, renewal and margin dollars into print
  • Delivery reach offsets softness sooner than expected
