NKE

SELL
September 16, 2026Horizon stated in the case: 5-day horizon

Published once at least 12 trading days had closed after this run.

Summary

Sell NKE, that is NIKE, Inc., and fade strength toward overhead supply rather than chase the breakdown near the lower support zone. Invalidation on settled closes above overhead resistance, with downside expansion on a settled break below support. Use defined risk spreads only given IV 65.6%, and respect daily volatility around 2.5%. 5 day horizon through the Fed decision and Sept 21 index exclusion into Oct 1 NKE earnings; revisit only on insider buying or receivables and inventory normalization.

The case

Our analysis is bearish on NKE, that is NIKE, Inc., and we stage it as an outright Sell. 1. Trend continuation: the settled close sits below falling short term, medium term and long term averages as well as VWAP and the middle band, with every average falling daily and closes below VWAP since late August, while momentum failing under the midpoint with a new low and negative histogram is trend continuation, not washout. The print finished only 0.6% above the year low and just above falling lower support, so normal noise tags overhead supply before any break matters. 2. Risk reward and catalysts: risk toward overhead supply versus expansion below support toward the bear case with about 35% downside favors selling rallies. Bearish positioning is supported by elevated put call activity, IV at 65.6%, a market fear gauge showing fear, sell side downgrades on oil and rates and aggressive estimates beyond Q3, uneven wholesale with North America improving but international weak and promotional, weak China, down 40% year to date, insider selling at lows, plus the Fed decision binary today, index removal on Sept 21 bringing passive selling, and earnings on Oct 1. 3. Fragile quality and squeeze risk: quality is a fragile turnaround not collapse with gross around 49% versus around 40%, operating income up, operating and free cash flow covering the quarterly payout, cash stable, low net debt, current ratio solid, inventory flat, buyback paused, equity up 12%, return on equity around 22%, but trailing dividend uncovered by trailing free cash flow, receivables up 25.7% versus revenue down 1.1% with payables inflow offsetting receivables drain and tax at 19.5% versus 33.6% flattering net, $2B debt rolled to current into spiking yields, retained earnings negative, no numeric guidance, advance orders disavowed, lawsuits and dual class overhang. Crowded positioning plus high volatility leaves room for a 12%+ squeeze on neutral macro relief, which is why we use defined risk and keep sizing light rather than chase. 4. Lessons and execution: past lessons decide sizing with fading rallies capped below resistance avoiding 1.5% and 1.8% drawdowns, holding a light core saved 0.4%, but pressing early without accelerating distribution left 1.1% upside, identical to now just above support, and confirmation demands a settled high volume close below support before adding, so we keep a Sell bias, require settled closes to judge overhead supply and resistance, stand aside through the Fed and removal washout, and resize only after Oct 1 on wholesale by geography, promotion, China, inventory and systems, receivables collection versus payables reversal, refinancing terms, restored guidance plus insider buying reversal.

What would weaken it

  • 12%+ squeeze on neutral macro relief with high beta
  • Insider buying or receivables/inventory normalization
  • Fed relief or wholesale/China improvement into Oct 1 earnings
