PCG

SELL
September 14, 2026Horizon stated in the case: next 5 trading days

Published once at least 12 trading days had closed after this run.

Summary

Sell PCG (PG&E Corporation) for the short term trading book. Exit longs and avoid new longs; our analysis favors fading strength into overhead moving average confluence, with further trim zones at higher resistance. Keep positioning small and tactical into weekend outage risk with IV at 118.8%, as normal adverse excursion is about 5.8% of price; do not chase long calls. Invalidation is a settled close above resistance with expanding volume plus full restoration of at risk customers; downside is toward recent lows. Horizon is the next 5 trading days.

The case

Sell PCG (PG&E Corporation) because near term edge is bearish and prior Sell discipline still applies.

1) Technicals stay weak. Our analysis sees shares trading below declining short and long term moving averages with momentum still negative and RSI soft after a washout and failed bounce. Volume has collapsed from crash bars to thin prints, normal noise is about 5.8% of price, and bands are wide with price well below the mid band. Repeated closes lower with a lower high failing overhead confluence shows lack of demand. Layered overhead sits above versus a downside magnet about 5.5% down then more than 9% down, with lows not retested on a closing basis, which tempers chasing lows.

2) Fundamentals screen cheap as a value trap with about 41.5% paper upside, but revenue is flat and operating cash is down about 14% to $906M on a $1.42B working capital swing including $863M in other working capital and $485M receivables timing, while capex is $2.967B and free cash flow is negative $2.06B for the quarter and negative $6.15B trailing, funded by $5.2B issuance versus $3.4B repayment. Debt is about $64.7B with net debt about $63.2B versus EBITDA about $10.45B, quarterly interest about $796M versus operating income about $1.26B with $623M cash interest paid and cash only $972M. Net is up 38% flattered by an $87M tax benefit, dividend doubled to $110M from $55M while burning cash for only 1.45% yield, receivables about $11B including $7.2B other, ROE 9.3% and ROA 2.5%, and consensus target already cut 12.41%. Liquidity healed year over year with opex controlled and EBITDA up 4% year over year despite Q2 revenue -14.2% quarter over quarter, but book only exists if the regulator allows recovery.

3) Sentiment and news are binary into Monday. Social sentiment shows retail dip buying against institutional hedging with IV at 118.8%, while a market fear gauge shows fear. Live wires include outage warnings and initiations with customers still at risk, versus liability bill failure leaving insurer subrogation intact as an overhang that directly haircuts book, plus a municipalization petition, balancing account under collection, criticism of bailouts, pressure on purchased power, and AI slowdown undercutting data center load hopes, while a large tech partner VPP has no capacity or dollars disclosed and de energization cuts both ways.

4) Execution favors a staged fade on strength. A prior Sell correctly anticipated no recovery pinned below resistance, avoiding -1.9% decline for -0.3% alpha with zero foregone upside. Reversal still requires a settled close above resistance with RSI expansion, not met, and our analysis counsels against pressing full size without a confirmed close below support on expanding volume, hence a small staged fade rather than a market dump, respecting weekend gap risk, elevated volatility and reversible working capital.

What would weaken it

  • Weekend gap above resistance on restoration headlines
  • Elevated 118.8% IV whipsaws small tactical short
  • Regulatory recovery allows book value defense
