MU

SELL
September 11, 2026Horizon stated in the case: 5 trading days

Published once at least 12 trading days had closed after this run.

Summary

Sell MU into intraday firmness on an unfinished bar: reduce outright longs to zero, initiate no new longs, and keep any tactical residual to a minimal starter to respect wide volatility and elevated beta. Risk is defined against failed breakout resistance above, with support at the middle band and VWMA cluster then the 50-day and lower band below. Our analysis looks through a 5 trading day horizon through CPI and Fed into Sept 30 earnings with IV 106.8%; avoid naked long MU options, prefer cash or defined risk, and revisit only after a settled close or once binaries clear.

The case

Sell MU, Micron Technology, Inc., because downside risk outweighs upside after a failed breakout with razor thin support into peak cycle and binary risk.

1. Tape fragility: marginal print above the upper Bollinger band then a full average range settled drop to the mid band. Momentum faded with histogram more than halved in two bars, RSI neutral with no bounce edge, 50-day still declining a full average range representing more than 5% of price below, with middle band and VWMA next then lower band. Upside is capped to resistance above, and one normal day wipes the nearby support cluster.

2. Peak cycle trap: ~80% operating margin on DRAM +140% and NAND +130% that filings warn can reverse sharply below cost, forward valuation on ~$155 vs trailing ~$44 pricing perfection, elevated book multiple for commodity fabs, elevated beta, already -19% from the June high yet +58% above the 200-day after a ~500% run. $26B cash is only ~2.5% of $1.1T cap vs ~$200B drawdown erased, while receivables >$31B consumed ~$11.6B working capital and quarterly capex ~$7.8B with construction in progress doubled to ~$10.9B adds supply at peak pricing.

3. Binaries leave no paid hold: Sept 30 earnings with IV 106.8% with dead days ahead, a market fear gauge showing fear, near locked Fed hike, CPI, rates and oil swamping a sell side Overweight and dragging peers -5% and -3%, Taiwan ~60% capacity including HBM for large AI customers at plant strike threat, plus memory saving tech reigniting demand destruction. Bull supports — added shares in Q2, 68% bullish crowd, holding above the 50-day since late Aug and rising VWMA since mid Aug, operating cash up sharply matching net income, FCF ~$17B, debt cut $16B to ~$6B, equity doubled, current ratio strong, inventory flat — are stale pre drawdown, hedged by elevated puts, and an 11-2 bullish tilt on social sentiment channels with no bids and flat trend shows talk vs money divergence. Long term contracts remain unquantified narrative until Sept 30 proves coverage and collection, and circular funding concerns leave volume locks unsecured.

4. Exit into strength preserves optionality: our analysis favors using bounce liquidity to exit, avoiding time decay, freeing capital to press cleaner AI capex breadth, and reloading lower at a one average range support zone or on pricing dislocation elsewhere if supply strikes, since waiting for a settled close below support guarantees selling lower into an air pocket. Discipline is enforced by a prior Overweight that was wrong with -4.3% alpha (-4.9% raw) buying 1% under the upper band at prior supply that rejected; lesson is to require a settled full volume close over resistance before adding beyond a starter into vertical extension. Current failed breakout validates that rule, and an unfinished bar with defined risk does not block selling strength here. Price reconciliation shows the two prints differ by ~0.1%, well under a 2% flag, so no pipeline discrepancy.

What would weaken it

  • Peak-cycle DRAM/NAND pricing collapses below cost
  • CPI/Fed/earnings binaries trigger sharp squeeze
  • Taiwan supply disruption spikes memory pricing
