Summary
Sell IMTX at 9.36 into 50-SMA resistance. Position size: 0% new longs; existing longs exit/lighten 100% (or min 50% if mandated biotech exposure). Time horizon 5 days: avoid dilution pricing window. Risk levels: resistance 9.44 (50 SMA) then 9.70-10.04 (200 SMA/Bollinger upper) caps upside ~7%; downside 8.87 (1x ATR 0.49), 8.69 Perceptive print, 8.55 Aug 20 low. Re-enter only on washout to 8.69-8.55 or confirmed close >9.44 on >750k volume. Do not buy calls at 158.6% IV; use spreads if needed.
The case
Our analysis supports a Sell at current levels.
1) Technicals show a counter-trend bounce stalling at resistance. The moving averages remain in a bearish stack with price rejecting the 50-day average and then slipping -0.74% on fading volume. Momentum has stalled with RSI flattening and MACD still negative despite a small positive histogram tick that is typical of bear-market rallies rather than a reversal, while the volume-weighted average has declined even as price rose.
2) Fundamentals confirm accelerating cash burn and lumpy revenue. The trailing net loss and negative free cash flow remain large, with the quarterly operating loss up 87% year over year and R&D up 41%, gross profit deeply negative, and revenue falling sharply quarter over quarter. Share count is already up 12.4% year over year, and the new $150M offering remains unpriced, adding further double-digit dilution and discount risk that outweighs any near-term catalyst.
3) Sentiment and positioning do not justify chasing strength. Social sentiment is thin and heavily call-skewed on light options volume, with implied volatility at 158.6% making outright long calls uneconomical; spreads would be required if hedging. The recent $7.5M institutional print near the lower band is a capitulation-level catch, not a floor, and hedging is impractical at current volatility.
4) Risk/reward is skewed downward through a multi-week dead zone ahead of the October medical conference. With upside capped at around 7% by overhead supply and downside toward recent lows carrying larger gap risk on thin liquidity, holding a core position through the dilution pricing window offers poor compensation. We prefer to exit or lighten substantially now and re-enter only on a washout toward the lower band or on a confirmed high-volume close above resistance.
What would weaken it
- Unpriced $150M offering creates double-digit dilution and discount risk
- Bounce stalls at 50-day resistance on fading volume; bearish MA stack
- 158.6% IV makes hedging uneconomical; gap risk into Oct catalyst window
