BSP

UNDERWEIGHT
August 13, 2026Horizon stated in the case: 5 trading days

Published once at least 12 trading days had closed after this run.

Summary

Underweight BSP with no new directional position. Do not initiate longs at current levels (balance sheet risk too high, short-term momentum broken); do not initiate shorts either (crowded put positioning creates squeeze risk, medium-term trend intact above 50/200 SMA). For existing holders, trim into resistance at the 10 EMA ($43.92) / VWMA ($43.45). Set alerts: a close below $37.16 (50/200 SMA) justifies a bearish shift; a close above $43.92 justifies a bullish shift. Time horizon is 5 trading days, but the decisive data point is the next quarterly interest-expense line. Position sizing: zero new capital; if forced to express a view, use defined-risk premium selling (put spreads below $37 support, call spreads above $43.92) given 98.8% IV, not directional delta.

The case

The bull and bear cases largely cancel out, but the balance-sheet deterioration tilts the verdict toward reducing exposure. The bull is right on operations: 67% gross margin, 38.8% operating margin, 153% revenue growth, 240% FCF growth, and a 20.8x forward P/E that is reasonable IF the earnings inflection materializes. But the bear successfully exposed the flaw in that thesis: interest expense grew 385% YoY ($20M → $97.1M), the company issued $1.97B in new debt in a single quarter while spending $1.64B on acquisitions, and the latest quarter still posted a net loss. The bull's claim that the interest burden is "temporary" is contradicted by the company's own debt-issuance behavior — it is adding debt, not paying it down. The balance sheet is genuinely precarious: 416.9x debt-to-equity, negative tangible book value of -$4.39B, current ratio below 1, and ~2.1x interest coverage on negative equity. The insight that each acquisition adds debt, which adds interest, which suppresses net income, is the single most important point in our analysis.

However, the aggressive-short case is also weakened. The stock remains above its 50 and 200 SMAs, the medium-term trend is intact, put/call open interest of 7.08 creates genuine squeeze risk, and the stock sits only 6-8% above support at $37-38.50 while downside to the 52-week low is 26%. Hawkish Fed commentary (Hammack) is a real headwind for $3.62B in net debt, but the crowded short positioning cuts both ways.

Our analysis warns that a neutral stance on high-beta names frequently misses directional swings (SPCX +9.6%, U +11.9%, TTD -2.8%). We acknowledge this risk, but BSP's setup is genuinely two-sided: the balance sheet caps upside conviction while squeeze risk and an intact trend cap downside conviction. On balance, the broken momentum, fragile balance sheet, and growing interest expense warrant a mild bearish tilt — enough to justify an Underweight stance over the next 5 trading days, while the squeeze risk and intact medium-term trend argue against an outright short.

What would weaken it

  • Interest expense grew 385% YoY ($20M → $97.1M) with $1.97B new debt issued
  • Balance sheet precarious: 416.9x debt-to-equity, -$4.39B tangible book value
  • Crowded put positioning (put/call OI 7.08) creates squeeze risk on any short
